This lovely arrangement of the immortal American tune is for wind ensemble and percussion and continues Michael Hale’s exploration of that genre. A solo flute opens with a solo horn closing the work, and in between the woodwinds and brass act as choirs with both homophony and polyphony. All of this builds to an overwhelming climax which then tapers elegantly to the end. This arrangement should find favor with ensembles and audiences alike.
